I’ve always loved platform games. Donkey Kong, Super Mario Brothers, Zelda and Sonic to name a few. There were three games I used to play on the Playstation over and over again.
- Blinx Time Sweeper
- Abe’s Oddysee
If I had to choose, I’d say Abe’s Oddworld was my all-time favourite. I loved the storyline and the characters. The backdrop graphics were excellent. There were loads of hidden areas and some fun tricks Abe had up his sleeve.
The first platform game I played was on my Amstrad CPC464 with cassette tape drive. Oooooo!! It was called
R A N A R A M A. Anyone remember it? It was a little frog who hunts down evil wizards.
The game was set in a dungeon with a labyrinth rooms and houses with glyphs, wizards and monsters of all sorts. You couldn’t see what was in each room before you entered and sometimes there would be an immediate attack, so my strategy sometimes was to go into a room and leave it fast before you got killed.
Contact with wizards left you madly trying to unscrambing the mixed up word “RANARAMA” within a strict time limit. My purchase of a joystick made that a log easier than using the keyboard. If you failed then you lost your powers. If you managed it then you would destroy the wizard and collect his runes for new spells! It was bloody bloomin brilliant! Check out those graphics! heehee.
You can get still play the game, just need to run a PC emulator. I’m almost tempted but I probably won’t. I just know I will be disappointed. Nothing like rose tinted spectacles ;). Plus children will laugh at me!
